Red lanterns swayed gently as coils of incense smoke drifted upward toward the ceiling. Despite it being a weekday, the grounds of Lukang Tianhou Temple were bustling with worshippers. As a central site of Mazu devotion, this temple is often said to embody the very history of Lukang itself.
Lukang once flourished as a thriving port town during the Qing dynasty. Ships from the mainland docked here, bringing not only goods but also cultural influences. The temple’s ornate carvings—its intricately sculpted roofs and pillars—and the steady presence of people offering prayers all serve as living reminders of that prosperous, cosmopolitan past.
Even today, the craftsmanship of artisans from mainland China can be seen in the temple’s decorations. The dragons and phoenixes perched atop the roof stand not only as guardians but as symbols of the wealth and devotion that have long shaped Lukang’s identity.
