While walking through the crowded street, I had come to a fruit store. A variety of fruits are lined up on the store shelves. There were dragon fruits and guavas. In Bangkok, a tropical country, these fruits are not uncommon. What caught my attention was that there were also things sold that are not commonly seen in Bangkok. Peaches were sold alongside tropical fruits.
Peaches, which are not rare in Japan, originate from China and are not produced in Thailand. It is rare to see them in Bangkok. Thailand's climate is probably too hot for growing peaches. The world's largest producer of peaches is China, which is also the country of origin, so these peaches must have been grown in China. It is the same with apples. They come a long way from their hometowns where they were born and raised, and are displayed on store shelves in Bangkok. The reason you don't see them as often as apples must be because Thais are not yet familiar with them.
From what I have seen, peaches are treated as a luxury fruit here. While other fruits were piled up on the table in a bare pile, peaches were individually wrapped in a protective net to prevent them from being damaged.
