Sometimes I feel like I'm wandering indoors at a moment when I should be walking outside

Alley of Wan Chai

Even though I was walking outside, there were moments when it felt like I was wandering through an indoor maze. The alley I walked through in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, was exactly that kind of place. Colorful awnings stretched out from both sides, creating a canopy overhead. Blue and red vinyl roofs filled the upper part of my vision, and beneath them, a dense lineup of street stalls: socks, hats, phone accessories, fabrics, bags, watches—every inch of the narrow path, barely wide enough for two people to pass, was crammed with the texture of everyday life.

Looking up, there was hardly any sky to be seen. Instead, there were towering building walls, rows of tightly packed windows, sagging electrical wires, and hanging lights.

This tightness, this density—this is Hong Kong.
