The sky seemed so small because the skyscrapers were so tightly lined up that they covered most of the view

In Hong Kong, the sky feels strangely narrow. Towering buildings crowd together so tightly that they block out nearly all of the view above. Even when you look up, only a sliver of blue remains—boxed in by concrete and steel.

That sense only intensifies when walking down the vendor-lined streets of Wan Chai. Amid the maze of stalls, a man stood quietly, staring at the goods laid out before him. The air between the ground and the looming walls felt like a squeezed, sliver of space—crammed with voices, the rustle of shopping bags, and the sharp calls of shopkeepers.

Perhaps it’s that compressed intensity—so full of heat and daily life—that makes Hong Kong feel both suffocating and strangely magnetic at the same time.
