In Indian cities, you often see people just sitting on the side of the road, not belonging to any one place.

Two men on the sidewalk

Walking through the streets of Mumbai, I often came across people sitting idly by the roadside—belonging to no place in particular, simply resting on the edge of a curb. They weren’t doing anything in particular. Some watched the street, others chatted with a friend, and many just sat silently, letting the breeze wash over them. It’s not something you often see in Japan, and at first, I was puzzled—who were these people, and what were they doing? But I quickly realized that my confusion was probably unnecessary. There’s no rule that says you need to be doing something. It’s perfectly fine to just sit, to be still.

The two men I met that day were just like that. One held a smartphone in his hand, the other looked straight into my lens. There was no striking backdrop, just a plain wall on an ordinary street corner. And yet, their smiles fit perfectly into the frame.
