As I was looking at the items for sale at a food stall in the Sampeng Market, I noticed a woman squatting right next to me. The woman wearing an apron was not a customer, but the owner of the stall. While I was looking at the items for sale, she was staring at me. I apologize if she was waiting for my order to come in. I was just watching.
When I pointed my camera at her instead of ordering, she was a bit surprised. She then smiled shyly as she showed me the skewers and coriander she was selling. I guess she couldn't think of what to do at once when the camera was suddenly pointed at her. She was adorable.
Coriander, which she holds in her left hand, is a herb that has become common in Japan as well. It is an indispensable ingredient in Thai cuisine. Just as cumin makes anything Indian or wild parsley makes anything Japanese, Coriander instantly makes it Thai. Recently, its popularity has been soaring in Japan, and menu items such as this and this are now available with coriander. There are even mojitos with coriander. For those who are not satisfied with the garnish, there is even a pile of coriander. However, Thai people say that it is only for flavoring and not for eating. The sight of eating a heaping pile of coriander itself looks like eating a heaping pile of parsley to Thai people.
