Bangkok's Sampeng Market is bustling with activity. The street is full of shoppers, and vendors are moving through the crowd. Many of the vendors you see here are selling fruits. This is probably because it is easy to buy fruits when you get hungry while shopping.
The woman in the photo is also a vendor pushing a wagon in the Sampeng Market. On the wagon is a container with a fruit that looks like guava and an unidentifiable dip. It was probably a dip to put on guavas. In Thailand, it is customary to eat fruits with dip.
In Japan, the only way to put dip on fruits is to sprinkle salt on watermelon, but in Thailand, there are many options. There are many kinds of dips, such as Prik glua (salt), Gapi wan (dried shrimp paste), and Nam pla wan (sugar with shrimp powder, fresh chili peppers, and sliced onions).
At first glance, one might think that putting dip on fruit would spoil the sweetness of the fruit, but since this is a custom in Thailand, where fruit is abundant, it is probably done to bring out the sweetness of the fruit. Thinking about this, I pointed my camera at the peddler woman and got a wry smile on her face.
