There was a plastic roof on the side of the road, and a wagon was parked underneath. It was a food stall. A few bottles and a lot of canned goods were visible on the wagon. The canned goods in particular were piled high as if to form a wall. There seemed to be two kinds of canned goods on the floor. One was painted red and the other white. To the casual observer, they look like Campbell's soup cans, the subject of Andy Warhol's work. But this is Bangkok, a city in the tropics where the average annual temperature is 29 degrees Celsius. No matter how delicious it is, few people would want to drink hot soup on the side of the road where people are sweating. Given that, it must not be soup that is being sold here.
As I got closer and took a closer look, I realized that what this stall was selling was cold milk tea. The cans that looked confusingly like Campbell's soup cans were canned milk from a company called Carnation, and the bottles next to the pile of cans were syrup. The milk tea here seems to be quite sweet. Not only here, but many of the drinks sold in tropical countries are sweet. Something sweet seems to be good for the boiling heat. I don't know.
