When I crossed the Nam Khan River from the peninsular old town of Luang Prabang, I found ourselves on the outskirts of the city. An unpaved road stretched up to the top of a hill where trees grew thickly. This seemed to be a pathway for the locals, and many people often came and went.
After a while, a young Buddhist monk appeared. Like many other monks in this city, he was holding a sunshade to avoid the strong sunlight. There are many sunshade boys in Luang Prabang. Monks walking around town always carry a sunshade. The reason seems to be that their robes called Kasaya are designed to show their right shoulder, so if they go out with their robes on, only their right shoulder will get sunburned.
