The fresh food area of the market we came to consisted of small sections that were neatly divided like squares. Each one looked like an independent grocery store. But all the compartments were about the same size, as if the entire market followed a uniform set of rules.
At first glance, it appears that all the stores are doing business on the same scale. But in reality, some stores might be using the outside of the plots to spread out their goods, or a particular store might be using more than one plot.
However, the seemingly even arrangement felt unequal, like equality. Is this a rule to maintain order in the market as a whole, or did it happen naturally over the long history of the market? Either way, I continued walking further into the market, feeling strangely bewildered by the orderly scene.
