In the market, I saw a man standing with his arms folded. He stands stoutly with his vegetables for sale in front of him, as if to say that this is his castle. His strong face is even intimidating, and shoppers feel as if they have to fight with him to get their vegetables. The vegetables on his sales floor looked like bell peppers and melons. He could not determine whether they were zucchini or the melons unique to India.
While walking through the market, I suddenly noticed the paucity of greens. There is certainly a wide variety of vegetables sold in the markets of Mumbai, but I could not find many of the greens that I often see in Japanese markets: komatsuna, spinach, bok choy and mizuna. Not entirely absent, but the variety is surprisingly small. Instead, the most prominent are tropical vegetables such as melons, eggplants, and peppers.
The differences in climate and food culture are probably reflected in this selection. The greens that are commonplace in Japan may not be mainstream here. With this thought in mind, and distracted by the man's grim expression, I continued on deeper into the market.
