Walking along Rama IV Road, I saw a street vendor of apples with her store spread out on the sidewalk. The tables were filled with large quantities of apples, along with measuring instruments and other items. It is not unusual to see apples for sale in Bangkok. One might think that this would lead one to believe that apple production is flourishing in Thailand as well, but this is not the case. If you look hard enough at the list of major apple-producing countries, you will not find the name Thailand anywhere. Thailand produces almost no apples. If you think about it, apples are grown in cold climates. They are probably not suited to the tropical climate of Thailand.
China produces the most apples in the world. Personally, I had not associated China with apples, so the ranking was a surprise. China produces more apples than any other country in the world, eight times as many as the U.S., which is in second place. Most of the apples sold on the streets of Bangkok may be imported from China. At any rate, this street vendor's store was located in a corner of Chinatown.
