As I walked through the aisles of the market in Thanlyin, I came to an area lined with stores selling fresh food. Although many foreign tourists have come to Myanmar, the wave of tourism has not yet come to Thanlyin, which is a short distance from the center of Yangon. There are no stores selling souvenirs for tourists in this market. There were only stores selling daily necessities and foodstuffs, and the only visitors seemed to be locals who lived nearby. Even when I wandered around the market, I was not approached by any touts. I didn't buy anything from the stores, I was just an observer walking around looking.
As I was doing this, I spotted a young woman wearing a bright purple dress. There was trays in front of her with a pile of chestnuts on it. The woman was selling chestnuts. I thought chestnuts were grown in cold places, so I was surprised to see them in Myanmar in Southeast Asia. I guessed there was a production area nearby. When I pointed my camera at the woman who was painting her face with thanaka, she smiled cheerfully at me.
