As in other markets, many women worked at the Thanlyin market. While the women were working in the market, the men were probably working in the fields. I don't know if the men actually work elsewhere, as the women are probably harder workers.
The woman in the photo was one of the workers at the end of the market aisle, displaying her wares. She was wearing a black shirt. While many people in Myanmar wear bright clothes that are close to primary colors, this woman was a bit different. According to one theory, there is a difference in the colors people prefer depending on their latitude, and people living near the equator, where the sun's rays are stronger, tend to prefer warmer, more vibrant colors. Such colors look better under strong sunlight. This may be why many people in Myanmar wear brightly colored clothing.
Whether such a theory is true or not, the woman in the photo is holding a wad of bills and chatting happily with a customer. Although the clothes she was wearing were all black, the hair ornament on her head was bright and tropical.
