Where do you think of the Great Buddha when you hear the word “Daibutsu”. Is it the Great Buddha at Todai-ji Temple or the one in Kamakura? If you live in Sendai, you may think of the Great Kannon of Sendai, and if you are familiar with the Joban Line, the Ushiku Daibutsu may come to mind. Many people probably associate the Daibutsu with their neighborhood. One would think that the Daibutsu would be a rarity, but contrary to one's expectations, there are Daibutsu all over Japan.
Of course, there are several Daibutsu statues in Tokyo. One of the largest cast bronze Daibutsu statues in Japan is located at Joren-ji Temple in Akatsuka, and another is at Tenno-ji Temple in the Yanaka Cemetery. There is also a Daibutsu statue called Yatsu Daikanon sitting in a peaceful residential area by the Shakujii River in Takinogawa, Kita Ward. The statue is only 8.5 meters tall, including the pedestal, and sits quietly among the surrounding houses. Unlike the Ushiku Daibutsu statue, which can be seen from a distance, the Daibutsu seems to be quietly wishing for the peace of people.
