Sarushima can be reached in about 10 minutes by taking a boat from the pier next to the battleship Mikasa, which served as the flagship of the Allied Fleet during the Russo-Japanese War Battle of the Sea of Japan. This largest natural island in Tokyo Bay is uninhabited and is now a park where visitors can enjoy fishing, swimming, and barbecuing. But it was not until after World War II that such activities could be enjoyed on Sarushima. Before the war, the Sarushima Battery of the Tokyo Bay Fortress was built on the island and was off limits to the public.

The ruins of the fortress, dug out of the rock wall and covered with bricks, still remain today, and I believe that walking around the ruins of the fortress is a better way to enjoy the island than fishing or barbecue activities. Looking out at the sea from where the gun emplacements once stood, or walking through the brick ammunition storage ruins and corridors, one feels as if he or she has entered an extraordinary world. The ultimate moment was when I headed in the direction of the electronic sounds and spotted a robot soldier in my field of vision. The robot soldier was roaming around the ruins of the fortress. The atmosphere of the fortress ruins is so well suited to the atmosphere that you will surely be taken aback.
