The old structure glimpsed in the rear is Porta de Santiago. The Portuguese built this fortress in the 16th century when the area around Malacca was Portuguese territory. It is said to be the oldest remaining European architecture in Asia. The battered fort no longer functions as a fortress. It is now just another tourist attraction in Malacca.
As I made my way to the square in front of the old gate, I saw a trishaw parked there with a parasol attached. He is catering to tourists who have finished sightseeing at Porta de Santiago, which is a tourist attraction.
