In contrast to Omiya Hikawa Shrine, the headquarters of many Hikawa shrines in the Kanto region, which enshrines Susanoo-no-mikoto and has a large precincts and large shrine pavilions, Hikawa Nyotai Shrine, which enshrines Kushinadahime, the wife of Susanoo-no-mikoto, has modest grounds and shrine pavilions. The Omiya Hikawa Shrine, the Hikawa Nyotai Shrine, and the Nakayama Shrine are considered as the first shrines in Musashi Province, but the treatment of the three shrines seems to differ from shrine to shrine. The Omiya Hikawa Shrine is the "male shrine" that enshrines the husband, and the Hikawa Nyotai Shrine is the " female shrine," but the disparity between the two is like the difference in the size of a married couple's tea cup. The shrine that enshrines the husband is of higher rank, while the shrine that enshrines the wife is of lower rank.

Ascending a flight of stairs leading from the riverside, one arrives at the Hikawa Nyotai Shrine, which is tranquil at best, and deserted at worst. Most of the visitors to the shrine seem to be locals, and there are few people like me who come from far away. The shrine grounds are not large, but once I rounded the main hall, which was rebuilt by the fourth shogun, Tokugawa Ietsuna, in 1667, there was nothing more to see. Looking up, I saw the sacred camphor tree reaching straight up to the sky.
