I was walking just outside of Suwon Hwaseong, a World Heritage site. Viewed from the outside, Hwaseong is surrounded by fortress walls, which rise at the end of the street. Unlike in the Yi Dynasty, when the fortress was actually in use, there is an ordinary residential area just outside the walls, lined with houses.
A woman came out of her house just as I was passing by one. She was standing by the side of the road, holding an umbrella. On top of the hill beyond the woman's house, the magnificent stone Suwon Hwaseong watchtower looms. From the tower, the woman's house must be clearly visible. If I lived in a house just outside the city walls, I would feel like I was being watched all the time.
