The Yokosuka Museum of Art, located in Hashirimizi, Yokosuka, stands in an open location. After crossing the road from the surf and walking up a gentle slope, the building awaits you at the end of the slope. Not only is it close to the ocean, but the view of the ocean from the slope, planted with lawn, is also excellent, and if you are hungry, you can even eat while looking out at the ocean.
The openness of the museum is not only due to its location. While art galleries and museums are often dimly lit to protect their collections, the Yokosuka Museum of Art is brightly lit and has a high ceiling. This gives visitors a sense of openness when viewing artworks. The roof of the exhibition room on the basement floor is particularly high, giving visitors a feeling of spaciousness as if they were in a Gothic church.
The only decoration on the high walls, other than the artworks, are round windows placed here and there. Beyond the windows, one can see people eating in a restaurant and a boat floating on the sea. If you stare at the windows, you might think you are on a ship rather than in a museum.
