The Taoist temple called Dadaocheng Cisheng Temple near Dihua Street is popular not only because it enshrines Mazu, the goddess of navigation and fishery, who is worshipped with great devotion in Taiwan. It is true that Mazu is also enshrined in a temple in Yokohama's Chinatown, and is a much-loved deity in Taiwan. However, I believe that the real reason why so many people come to this temple is the food stalls that line the street in front of the temple. Not only are there many stalls lining the street in front of the temple, but there are also tables set up in the courtyard in front of the temple, where many people enjoy their meals.
This is not just a place with many stores. There are also restaurants that will make any food connoisseur swoon. There are also restaurants that were featured in an essay written by the Taiwanese poet Jiao Tung. "A Taste of Taiwan” describes the delicious ‘pork spare rib soup’ served at one of these stalls. According to the author, this is an alley where “good food is gathered in high density". This is a heavenly temple where one can not only receive blessings from the gods, but also enjoy delicious food. No wonder it is so popular.
