I was walking down Malda when a woman I met looked straight at me. She had long hair. She looked straight at me as if she was competing with me pointing a camera at her. I looked through the viewfinder and saw a piercing in the woman's nose.
For a long time, I wanted to know why so many Indian women have piercings only in the left hole of their noses, but recently I finally figured it out. In South Asia, the left hole of the nose is believed to be closely related to the female genitalia, and piercing the left hole is believed to relieve menstrual cramps and pain during childbirth. Nose piercing may be an aspect of fashion, but it is not the only reason why many people get their noses pierced. It is also a way of wishing for good health.
