I was standing on the main street of Luang Prabang, looking at Wat Mai. Although it was a Buddhist temple, it looked completely different from Buddhist temples in Japan. The curved roofs are folded in layers. This style is called the Luang Prabang style.
There are many temples in this city and it is registered as a World Heritage Site. It is the ancient capital of Laos. The temples are all still functioning, and I see many Buddhist monks when I walk around the town. As I looked at Wat Mai, a monk came into my view from the side.
A young monk in robes and his friend were walking close together. They were both under the same umbrella. I often see monks with umbrellas in this city. It has become an essential item for monks who walk with their right shoulder exposed.
