The actors were relaxing next to the stage after the ritual play that was being performed on the stage set up in the precincts of the Shiluodian in Tainan. Since the play had just ended, everyone was resting with their costumes and makeup still on.

Every performer wore makeup that looked like a mask. Even the man in the photo wearing a crown-like hat had his face covered in a green-toned pattern. In a different color, it could have looked like a Kabuki actor's kumadori (a color that is used by kabuki actors). Among the distinctive makeup, what caught my eye were his thick, bright red eyebrows. They were not fake eyelashes, but fake eyebrows. With such thick eyebrows, every time I move my face, I feel as if I might bump into somewhere unexpectedly.
