The actors were relaxing by the side of the stage as the curtain closed on a ritual theater performance on a stage set up in the precincts of the Shiluodian in Tainan. They had just finished their performance and were still in their costumes and makeup. There was a somewhat comfortable air among them after the tension had been released.

Every performer wore mask-like makeup that covered their faces. The man in the photo was wearing a crown-like hat, and his face was covered with a green-based pattern. The combination of the pattern and the gaudy ornamentation was somewhat reminiscent of Kabuki makeup, although the coloring was different.

But it was his thick red eyebrows that caught my gaze the most. Not fake eyelashes, but fake eyebrows. When eyebrows are this thick, you feel as if you are in danger of bumping into something every time you move your face. Still, the presence of the eyebrows made his overall atmosphere more prominent.
