I met a girl in Thanlyin who had thanaka applied to her cheeks. Upon closer inspection, I found that it was applied not only to her cheeks but also to the bridge of her nose. Thanaka is a cosmetic product that has many uses, including being a sunscreen, makeup, and conditioner. It is that thanaka that is applied to the girls' faces.
In Myanmar, when asked, it is said that even if you apply thanaka to your face, it can show your individuality and make you look cute, depending on how you apply it. I can certainly see how it shows individuality, but I don't know what kind of paint is pretty. Even though I knew that the girl smiling in front of the camera was cute, I didn't know if the way she painted was cute or not.
