Baby with kajal and bindi

The baby was being held by the mother I met in Malda, who had a bindi drawn firmly between its eyebrows and had its eyes framed with kajal. And it gave me a big look as she approached. But something didn't sit well with it and it shot me a sharp look.

Kajal is a type of makeup tool for women, but it is sometimes applied to children as well. In this case, it is meant to protect the child from evil. The fact that this child gave me a piercing stare means that I may have been judged to be evil to it.
