Actors who had finished their performance were relaxing next to the temporary stage. There was a sense of harmony and calm among them, freed from the tension of their performance. I watched them and decided to take their picture.
The man in the photo was one of these actors. His face was painted blue and he had bold fake eyebrows. Another actor, whom I was allowed to photograph just a few moments ago, was wearing the same gaudy makeup. I suppose it is standard practice in such ritual theater to apply bright colors and distinctive decorations to the face.
We did not know the details of what kind of performance was being performed. But the gaudy makeup and the expressions on their faces suggested something more than mere acting. It was a space where sacredness and human enjoyment were strangely mixed. Perhaps that is the charm of ritual theater.
