Many automobiles were parked on the edge of the wide street. When I came to Myanmar 8 years ago, most of the automobiles running in Yangon were Japanese used vehicles. Some cars ran with ads written in Japanese and I watched them interestingly. Yet the situation was changed. The Myanmar authority lifted a ban on the import of cars when it shifted to civilian rule. The new motor vehicle registrations seemed to increase after that. And I saw many new cars running the streets at the time of this visiting.
Contrast to the extension of automobiles' power, the human-powered vehicles seemed to lose the strength. The pedicab drivers waited for customers beside the automobiles parked by the roadside as if they were ashamed. The traditional pedicabs were being taken the place of the leading player on the streets. When I focused on one of them, the rickshaw man thumbed up powerfully as if he displayed the might of human-powered vehicles.
