The market in central Yangon was covered by a large roof, and small stores on stilts were lined up under the roof. It was as if the square blocks of stores were arranged in a grid pattern. Walking along the passageways stretching between the stores, I felt as if I were walking through a diorama of a town reproduced in a museum. However, this is not a museum. The square blocks are actual stores selling goods, and the shopkeepers take off their shoes and go up to the stores to do their business.
The boxy market was laid back. Most of the stores were open, but it was hardly busy. All the stores were relaxing and enjoying their time. As I passed by one store, I saw a man in longyi sitting in the store against shelves lined with merchandise. The man seemed to be completely swallowed up by the laid-back atmosphere of the market, and while the store was open, the man was sleeping, leaning against the shelves that covered the wall.
I don't know if the man is sleeping because he has finished his busy time or if he is sleeping in preparation for the busy time to come. Either way, the man was sleeping with a peaceful face. When guests arrive, he will probably be in a hurry to get up and deal with them.
