In Luang Prabang, almsgiving takes place every morning and is a major tourist attraction in the town. I also woke up early to watch. When I went out into the street at a time when the town was still in a haze, local believers were kneeling on the side of the road with offerings ready. They were waiting for the monks to arrive.
In the meantime, the monks appeared, walking in single file along the road. The monks, each carrying a container for receiving alms, stopped in front of a believer kneeling by the roadside and offered alms one after another. Laos is a predominantly Theravada Buddhist country. Ordained monks are highly respected.
