Swayambhunath in Kathmandu is a Buddhist temple. To be precise, it is a temple of Newar Buddhism, an esoteric sect of Buddhism practiced by the Newars living in the Kathmandu Valley. Newar Buddhism is the oldest sect of esoteric Buddhism, said to have been established more than 600 years before Tibetan esoteric Buddhism, and is the only existing traditional Buddhism that continues to use the Sanskrit language.
A young boy sitting on the temple grounds was wearing a Buddhist's robe. Perhaps he is an ordained priest, even though he is very young. When I pointed my camera at him, he looked uneasy.
