Although India is predominantly Hindu, it is also home to a significant Muslim population. While Islam did not originate in India, its influence dates back centuries. The Ghaznavid and later Ghurid dynasties, originating from present-day Afghanistan, invaded North India, paving the way for long periods of Islamic rule. That legacy remains deeply embedded in modern India, with Muslims making up nearly 20% of Mumbai’s population. As a result, mosques are a common sight throughout the city.
The boy in the photograph was Muslim. He wore a taqiyah, the traditional cap often worn by Muslim men, yet his focus was entirely on his smartphone game. It was a quiet yet striking image—one that seemed to encapsulate the contrast of Mumbai itself, where deep-rooted tradition and the modern world exist side by side.
