There is an image of India as an IT powerhouse, with global companies like Google coming to recruit graduates from the Indian Institutes of Technology and so on. In an IT powerhouse, you would think that everyone has a smartphone and payments are made in a smart, cashless way, but in reality, India is a very different place. Even though almost everyone in Mumbai seems to have a smartphone, the penetration rate for India as a whole has not yet reached 50% (by 2022). Also, many stores have QR codes for payment, but quite a few people still pay in cash. I had the impression that Japan was lagging behind India in IT, but I don't think that's true, at least when it comes to travel. I heard a rumor that more and more people are avoiding eating curry with their hands because it makes their smartphone screen dirty, but that was not the case from what I observed in the restaurant. I was surprised to see grown-ups showing their smartphones to each other and chatting, and I thought it was much the same as in Japan.
