The alley I stepped into in Mumbai was just a short walk from the famous Gateway of India, yet it felt like an entirely different world—one untouched by tourism. There were no bright lights, no open spaces; only narrow passageways where even sunlight struggled to filter through.
Public water taps were scattered throughout, with buckets and dishes left haphazardly nearby—perhaps because many homes here lacked indoor plumbing. As I walked further in, I noticed something curious: the locals paid me little attention. In fact, they seemed almost unaware of my presence.
It wasn’t indifference, though. It was distraction. Most of the people here were completely absorbed in their smartphone screens. Even the two men captured in my photograph remained locked in deep concentration, their expressions tense as they stared intently at their devices, never once glancing in my direction.
