The alleyway was narrow and the sunlight did not reach the ground. Several baskets full of vegetables were lined up by the walls of the alleyway I stepped into in My Tho, Vietnam. This was a small grocery store in an alleyway. On the other side of the baskets sat a woman wearing a conical hat. This woman was probably the owner of the grocery store.
In the city of My Tho, where there were no convenience stores or even supermarkets, private shops like this one still operated everywhere. And since there's no such thing as a nationwide distribution system, all the vegetables sold must have been grown in this area. As a result, the people of this area automatically practice local production for local consumption.
