While some vegetable vendors in this Mumbai marketplace operated from proper storefronts, others ran their businesses from street stalls. Both sold nearly identical produce, making them direct competitors.
One might assume that setting up shop farther apart would make business easier for everyone. But perhaps there’s a different logic at play. By clustering together, these vendors may create a natural market hub, reinforcing the idea that this area is the place to buy vegetables. In turn, this concentration of sellers could actually attract more customers rather than dividing them.
As I mulled over this, I pointed my camera toward a woman working at one of the stalls. She glanced up, flashed a smile, and gave me a quick thumbs-up—a small, confident gesture.
Even in the midst of competition, there was an unmistakable sense of warmth and resilience in the air.
