Most of what was sold at Da Nyin Gone Market, which is far from the center of Yangon, was vegetables and other perishable foods. The market is filled with small grocery stores. At this time, I saw another small greengrocer in front of me. There were baskets lined up in front of the store, and on them were piles and piles of eggplants. Of course, other vegetables are sold, but eggplant seems to be the main product of this store. Unlike other vegetables, eggplants are arranged in several baskets. Eggplants in Myanmar seem to be more slender than eggplants in Japan.
As I was doing so, a woman wearing a hat came into the store. After exchanging a word or two with the owner, she squatted down and started stuffing eggplants into a plastic bag. How many eggplants does she intend to buy? What is the menu in the mind of the woman who is throwing eggplants into the bag one after another? I don't think eggplant occupies a major position in Myanmar cuisine. No matter what kind of dish she was planning to make, the way she was silently putting eggplants into the bag in the backlight looked somehow divine.
