After passing through the Nio-mon gate with the terrifying-looking Zocho-ten, the next thing that appeared was a steep staircase. The next gate can be seen standing at the top of the stairs. This is the Furo-mon Gate. Both sides of the stairs leading to the gate are planted with well-kept plants and trees, and if you didn't know any better, you might think it was the entrance to a botanical garden.
The main hall of Gokoku-ji Temple stands on the other side of this Furo-mon Gate. As you look around, worshippers appear uninterruptedly and climb these steep steps.
By the way, although it is not visible in the photo, the words on the oblong plaque of the Furo-mon Gate are said to be written by the Tokugawa Iesato. If the Meiji Restoration had not occurred, Tokugawa Ietatsu would have been the 16th Shogun in his generation.
