If it was too late, the temple grounds would be overflowing with people. With this in mind, I left home early in the morning and headed for Engaku-ji Temple. Engaku-ji Temple is the head temple of the Engaku-ji School of the Rinzai sect, located right in front of Kita-kamakura Station on the JR Yokosuka Line. I left the station from the east exit, walked along the railroad line toward Kamakura, and soon I came to the entrance. I was naive. I saw someone else heading for Engaku-ji Temple. I was so eager to be the first to arrive at the temple that two figures were climbing the stairs, having entered the temple grounds before me.

At the top of the stairs stood the temple gate, built in 1785. Engakuji Temple is a Zen Buddhist temple that was originally built to commemorate the war dead of the Genko pirates. Many Zen monks still practice in the quiet precincts of the temple.
