A small shrine stands at the edge of the grounds of a luxury hotel in the center of Bangkok. It is the Erawan Shrine. Although there are Muslims in the country, the majority of the Thai people are Buddhists and Thailand is considered a Buddhist country. Nevertheless, it is enshrined to Brahma, the Hindu creator god with four faces and four arms. A bit strange.
It is true that Buddhism is closely related to Hinduism because it began as a kind of counter-culture to Hinduism. Even in Japan, Brahma has been incorporated into the guardian deities of Buddhism under the name of Bonten. But I don't know why there is a shrine to Brahma in the middle of the capital city. Did they think that Gautama Siddhartha was not sufficient for the purpose?
At any rate, the Erawan Shrine is very popular among the locals. A golden statue of Brahma is enshrined in the center of the narrow temple grounds and is constantly visited by visitors. There are many offerings around the statue. The women in this photo were also praying to the golden statue.
