It is said that the name of the city of Mumbai comes from “Mumba,” the alias of Parvati, the queen of Shiva, who was worshipped by the fishermen. In Mumbai, a temple dedicated to Mumba still exists. The photo shows the entrance to the Mumba Devi temple. Next to the entrance is a store selling offerings, and visitors can be seen buying them.
This temple is sometimes introduced as a tourist spot, but when I visited, I was the only person who seemed to be a tourist. Perhaps because of this, the temple staff was very kind to me. It was a valuable experience for me to visit the temple while being given detailed explanations of the temple's etiquette and beliefs. I often feel at a loss when I visit religious facilities in foreign countries. However, when I receive such careful guidance, I leave with a deeper understanding of the culture and beliefs, and leave with a feeling of having understood many things.
