The paths of the Shinjuku Gyoen Park continue in a gentle arc. Overhead, the trees spread their branches, and the light spilling through the cracks painted a speckled pattern underfoot. Along the path, benches are set up here and there. The same sunlight softly shone down through the trees on these benches. It must be exceptionally pleasant to sit and relax in such a place.
I was not the only one who thought so. The benches along the path were all filled with people. One woman caught my eye. She had a small blanket spread out on her lap and looked as if she intended to spend the rest of the day sitting here. Her figure exuded a time that was not particularly urgent.
A bench is a popular place, after all. Perhaps it is a space with some abstract intimacy. I wanted to sit on one too, but it was not possible. Telling myself that it was inevitable, I decided to continue walking along the path.
