While walking from Takasaki Byakue Dai-Kannon toward Takasaki Station, I came across a river. At first I thought it was the Usui River along which I had walked from Daruma-ji Temple to Takasaki Byakue Dai-Kannon, but it was actually another river called the Karasu River. It looked not so different from the Usui River, but before I knew it, it had a different name. Is the Usui River a river that changes its name along the way like the Chikuma River or the Yodo River? If not, where did the Usui River disappear to? The Usui River must not be a wandering river like Lake Lop Nur, which the Swedish explorer Hedin pursued. As I looked at the map with this thought in mind, the reason for the disappearance was obvious. For those who are familiar with the geography of Takasaki, it would be obvious. But I had no idea. The Usui River merges with the Karasu River in Takasaki City and disappears. The point where I was walking was after the confluence, so the Usui River was nowhere to be seen, only its successor, the Karasu River, was flowing.
