I had come to Gunma Hachiman Station in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture. I had planned to rent a bicycle at Gunma Hachiman Station to tour around the city, since the spots I was planning to visit in Takasaki were scattered over a wide area. However, my plan fell apart as soon as I started my tour. I had planned to use the bike I rented at Gunma Hachiman Station to tour around Takasaki City and return it at Takasaki Station before heading home, but that was not possible. There was indeed a bicycle rental service at Gunma Hachiman Station, however, I had to return the bike I rented here. Although I had set Gunma Hachiman Station as my starting point, I had no plans to come back once I left here, and my plan to dump the bike at Takasaki Station had been foiled.

In the end, I gave up renting a bicycle and decided to walk around. As it turned out, this was a good choice. I had overlooked it on the map, but the area I was planning to visit had a large difference in elevation. If I had taken a rental bicycle without an assist function, I might have been able to go easily on the flat areas, but I would have had a hard time on the steep slopes that appeared again and again. I had not considered the elevation differences when I looked at the map, and we would have had to face unexpected difficulties. I remembered how many times I had to climb up and down steep hills as a result of only looking at the map, disregarding the fact that Amman, the capital of Jordan, was touted as a city built on seven hills.
