While the 20,000-seat track and field stadium and the Grand Staircase North Plaza with its basketball goals are impressive, the most interesting thing in the Olympic Park in Komazawa is the Olympic Monument. The tower is 50 meters high and stands in a corner of the plaza in the center of the park. However, because there are no tall buildings around it, it looks taller than it actually is. It is a symbol of the park.
At first glance, it looks like a 12-story building with 12 layers of roof-like projections. It is said that the central facilities for electricity, gas, water and communication are built inside, but I wonder how it works. Like the five-story pagodas and three-story pagodas in temples, it looks like it has many layers, but in reality it is a single structure, not divided.
Fortunately, Komazawa Olympic Park is large, and when I looked at the Olympic Monument over the grand staircase from the Grand Staircase North Plaza, which is a little lower than the park, only the tower appeared to be floating, with the sky as a cyclorama. The people playing around also appeared to be floating. It was a cyclorama of the sky that is hard to find in Tokyo, where the sky is so small.
