The interior of the Takasaki Byakue Dai-Kannon was much more modest than I had expected

Seen through the trees, the Takasaki Byakue Dai-Kannon seemed smaller than expected, but when one actually got closer, it was still huge. Built of reinforced concrete, the statue of Avalokitesvara stands 41.8 meters tall. According to Wikipedia, it was the world's largest statue of the Avalokitesvara when it was built in 1936. Aside from the rather interesting "world's largest Avalokitesvara statue" category, the fact remains that the statue is a huge Buddha statue and remains one of the largest in Japan.

As I looked up at the Buddha statue from its foot, I noticed an entrance to the interior at the foot of the statue. This giant Buddha can be entered. It looked interesting, so I stepped inside. Inside, there are 146 steps leading up to the top, and Buddha statues are enshrined in various places. The concrete interior was simpler than I had expected, and did not have the feel of the staircases found in stone spires in Europe. The only thing in common was that there were no escalators or elevators, so one had to steadily climb the stairs step by step.
