The young man who turned around was a tobacconist. His shop was a small, blown-out shop on a town corner in Kolkata. The walls were a uniform light blue color and boxes of cigarettes could be seen on a shelf behind him. The young tobacconist was sitting in this small area.
It's hard to imagine it in Japan, but many people don't buy cigarettes in boxes around here. Most people buy them in bulk, one or two cigarettes. So if you go to a tobacco shop and they have a box of cigarettes, it's not always 20 cigarettes in it. Some of them were already sold out. Even if I asked for a proper box of 20 cigarettes, sometimes the only thing I could find was a half-open box.
