When we think of Shibuya, we usually think of commercial buildings, scramble crossings, and Center Gai, but there are also quiet residential areas a little further away from the station. For example, the area where the Shibuya Hikawa Jinja Shrine is located is one such example. The dense precincts of the Shibuya Hikawa Shrine are a far cry from the typical image of Shibuya, and it is not a bad place to visit while strolling around the area. And if you visit Shibuya Hikawa Shrine, there is one more place you should definitely visit. The Kokugakuin University Museum is located nearby.
As the name suggests, the Kokugakuin University Museum is located on the Kokugakuin University Shibuya campus. The museum is amazing. The museum is divided into an archaeological zone and a Shinto zone, and not only presents the results of Kokugakuin University's research, but also promotes Japanese culture. It is rare to see exhibits that present Japanese culture. In the archaeological zone, visitors can learn about Japanese archaeological discoveries such as flaming earthenware, clay figures, bronze bells, and mirrors from the Kofun period, while in the Shinto zone, visitors can learn about some of the rituals held at Shinto shrines through an exhibit explaining the Shinto food offerings. Admission to the museum is free despite its extensive exhibits. It is a modest but worthwhile museum.
