Dressed in identical costumes, mariachi members stood in the middle of the street in Zaachila. They were waiting for the parade participants to arrive. The mariachi were playing as they waited, their mournful melodies echoing in the lonely street. As an outsider, I stood on the street with the mariachi members and waited.
After a while, the head of the parade came into view at the top of the hill. On the roof of the building in the background is a cross. This was Iglesia de Santa María, which stood in the center of town. After the mass here, the people finally left the church and started the parade.
