A cross hung at the far end of the church, with a row of stained-glass windows above it. The interior of St. Francis Xavier Church in Malacca is dimly lit. The only light inside comes from the stained glass windows. As its name suggests, this church was built to commemorate the achievements of Francis Xavier, a Jesuit who came to Japan as a missionary. Xavier was also a missionary here in Malacca for a time.
The body of Xavier, who died of a broken heart in Japan, was first transported to Malacca, which was then Portuguese territory. Later, it was transported to Goa, which is now Indian territory, where he is still buried.
